Symptoms of Depression in Teens
Symptoms of depression in teens vary from person to person. A depressed teenager may be irritable or cling to his/her parent and feel sad or angry. This behavior may affect their performance in school or at work and may lead them to self-harm or eating disorders. If you suspect your teen is depressed, you should seek help immediately. Call 911 or your mental health provider. Your child’s condition can worsen over time.
Mood disorders are common symptoms of depression. Individuals suffering from depression may feel tired, guilty, or worthless all of the time. They may also have difficulty concentrating, remembering details, making decisions, or sleeping. They may lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Some people may even experience decreased energy or fatigue, as well as a slowing down of their metabolism. They may also lose weight. But the most common sign of depression is lack of motivation.
Depression is one of the most treatable mental illnesses. About 80-90% of people who suffer from depression respond to treatment. A health care provider can also help identify other underlying issues that are causing your symptoms. Typically, treatment of depression takes a few weeks or months, although some individuals may see significant improvement in as little as ten to fifteen sessions. If you are seeking treatment for depression, you should contact your health care provider as soon as possible.
Some medical conditions can cause depressive symptoms in children. Cognitive complaints may indicate dementing disorders, and these symptoms may increase the risk of depression. Children with depression may also engage in compulsive behaviors that make them feel unusual and strange, and this can lead to social withdrawal. The symptoms of depression may affect a child’s school performance, their ability to bond with friends, and their relationships with others. A doctor can help your child cope with the symptoms of depression and help them live a happier and healthier life.
If you suspect your child may be suffering from depression, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Many symptoms of depression are common and can occur as part of another medical condition, such as thyroid disease, brain tumor, and vitamin deficiencies. A mental health professional can diagnose the specific cause of your depression and prescribe the proper treatment to help them recover. The sooner you seek treatment, the better your chances of recovery. But for those with depression, it may take years to heal from the illness.
Some people have a genetic predisposition to depression. The DSM tends to reify abstract phenomena such as the human brain. A social construct, depression may be a natural part of life. Archetypal psychologist James Hillman argues that depression is good for the soul because it brings focus, gravity, and humble powerlessness. He states that attempts to cure depression are simply demonizing a state of being. So, when we suffer from depression, we must work hard to recover from it.
